Tailbone pain, what a pain in the butt.
Some people have tailbone pain and they think that they have to live with it or it will go away on its own.
Luckily, you do NOT have to live with it!
Unfortunately, it very rarely goes away on its own.
What causes tailbone pain?
Your tailbone could have been injured during childbirth. It is rare, but possible to break your tailbone during childbirth. It is more common for it to be dislocated or injured due to the baby coming out.
If you fall and land on your tailbone (even as a kid) this can cause pain that lasts for years.
If you sit a lot for work and you do not have a chair that puts your pelvis in good alignment, this can cause tailbone pain from the muscles pulling awkwardly on your tailbone.
How do you fix it?
There are 3 main things that are important to decreased tailbone pain.
1) Posture. It is important that your spine has good movement throughout so that your tailbone can move in the directions it needs to.
2) Ligament connection. It is important that the ligaments that attach your tailbone are healthy and have good connection. You can do manual work and massage to help the ligaments be healthy and in their ideal resting position.
3) Decrease muscle pull. It is important that your muscles are not pulling on your tailbone leading to increased pain. You can stretch your pelvic floor muscles to help take pressure off of the tailbone. You can also increase the strength of other muscles to help the tailbone be in the “proper” place.
