How I had an unassisted VBAC

First, let me say, I did not plan on having an unassisted VBAC. My daughter helped choose that one.

I ended up having my son (first born) after not progressing much with a planned home birth. We transferred to the hospital and he ended up making his appearance in this world via my abdomen. He was healthy, so we were happy. However, after he was born, I couldn’t help but wonder if I could have helped prevent needing a c-section. And, who knows? Maybe that was the way he was supposed to enter the world. However, when I got pregnant with our second child, I wanted to prepare my body and mind differently to help prevent having another c-section.

I am a pelvic floor physical therapist so I took everything I had been taught and everything that I teach my clients and put it into practice for myself. I also spent more time and money on more continuing education courses to help further prepare my body and mind.

Needless to say, my daughter made her appearance under the supervision of my husband and that was it. She came so fast that our midwife showed up 7 minutes after she was born. Now, was my labor with her so easy and quick because of the things that I put into practice during my third trimester and active labor, or was it just the way she was supposed to enter the world? No one will ever know. But I do know that I want to help as many people as possible have the labor experience I had with her.

I realized how much more prepared both my body and mind were going through the process of labor after having my daughter compared with my son.
